Phryne Fisher is a woman of many qualities, some of which aren't entirely fitting of a woman of her standards in the late 1920s. Growing up in a poor family, in Collingwood she knows the effort of hard work and what it is like to be constantly hungry, never properly dressed etc. Even with a strange sort of luck that led her family into the lap of luxury she doesn't horde it to herself like other people in her situation might do but is free with her money in all situations. Mostly, she just likes helping people.
While she never attended university, she is highly clever and often sees things that others might. Plus, add in the fact that she hates not knowing things she has the makings of an excellent investigator much to the chagrin of her maid, Dot who she took under her wing not long after arriving in Melbourne to help a friend find out what was wrong with their daughter. Despite her beginnings in Melbourne, she found she quite liked the high society life that the town offered and decided to stay there. Most importantly though, she has a talent for making connections and seeing what others might not see which has gained her a reputation as an investigator.
Phryne hates being told what to do - by society and by those that mean well (though there are a few people she will listen to she mostly does just what she wants too). She's been known to take lovers - some for one night stands, some for longer despite how scandalous this might seem to some people. She's a lover of fine wine and other alcohols, nice clothes and long baths as well as strong coffee.
Phryne's first and foremost loyalty is to herself but despite that and her differences with her family she is loyal to them. Her closest family member was her cousin Arthur who isn't 'all there' though she is close to her Aunt Prudence no matter how much she annoys her. She would prefer to have nothing to do with her father though (unfortunately lately this isn't the case). Growing up, she was incredibly close to her sister though too and would have done anything for her. This didn’t extend to her father who she hates to this day. Growing up he was an alcoholic and a gambler and would often abuse her, locking her in the cupboard for days on end. Phryne, being the sort of person that she is, would often go out of her way to protect Janey though that would often mean getting in more trouble with their father. Even when she wasn’t in trouble, the family was often short on food and money leading her to learn how to steal and break in silently into houses a skill that she would use later in life as a PI.
Unfortunately, her childhood has made it hard for her to trust and fully open up to people. This was exacerbated by her relationship with Renee after the war, where he abused her both physically and emotionally. The aftermath of that is she’s completely sworn off commitment, love and connections instead living free and fast. Over the years, Jack has managed to worm his way into her heart and while it terrifies her she finds she’s unable to fully let him go and nor does she actually want to. Over the years she has improved but she still holds a lot of things close to her chest. She can get highly fixated on things such as finding out what truly happened to her sister and making Murdoch pay for it.
Despite all of that, Phryne loves a good mystery, having fun and spending time with her chosen family.
LINK: Phryne Fisher is the oldest of two children born to a poor couple in Collingwood, Melbourne on December 21st. Her mother came from a fairly rich family and her marriage to her father caused quite a scandal as he didn't come from a respectable family. Despite that they fell in love and married.
When Phryne was four, her sister Janey was born and she meant the world to Phryne. Their childhood wasn't pleasant. They never had any money and what little money they managed to earn, their father would spend on alcohol. He spent most of their lives drunk and would often lock Phryne in a cupboard in order to punish her. Her mother did nothing to stop him. Everything changed when Phryne was ten though and Janey was kidnaped. No trace of her was found though Murdoch Foyle was believed to have been the person who kidnapped her though there was never any proof. Phryne held onto the fact that he was guilty, for the rest of her life though.
When Phryne was fourteen, her life changed once again with the beginning of the Great War. Her father might have been poor but he had a lot of rich relatives in England and due to their deaths inherited a Barony, resulting in the Fisher family up and moving across the pond to settle in London much to Phryne's distate. She hated England, especially the school that she was forced to attend. The school tried to make her behave like a proper lady and play sports - two things she had absolutely no interest in doing. The only good thing was meeting Bungy Ross who would teach her to fly as well as Elizabeth MacMillian who would go on to become a dear friend of hers.
When Phryne was seventeen she gave up and ran away from school to France to join a woman's ambulance unit. There she met some wonderful people and witnessed many horrors which have stayed with her to this day. In fact, she refuses to speak of the war due to the memories it holds for her, of the people dying on the battlefield, of those she couldn't say and even the injuries she herself suffered while trying to rescue people on the front. That and she developed a hatred of thunderstorms which reminded her too much of the sound of cannon fire.
After the war ended, she ended up in Montparnasse in France where she became an artists model. It was here that she met Pierre Sarcelle who became a good friend of hers. It was also here that she met Renee Dubois who would become her first love. Unfortunately, their relationship ended when he became abusive, resulting in her running back to England while swearing to never become involved seriously with a man again. She refused to submit and be told what to do and until she came to Australia and met Jack Robinson she achieved in doing just that.
Over the years, she has taken a number of casual lovers both in England and in Australia though it has lately died off.
Arriving in Australia, she was soon caught up in solving Mysteries for friends and eventually started to work with the police as their paths crossed more and more often. The two police she worked with the most were DI Jack Robinson and Constable Hugh Collins, the latter who was stepping out with her maid, Dorothy "Dot" Williams who she had met and rescued during her first case here in Australia.
That year and the next pass by full of adventure and death. At the same time, she becomes closer to Dot, befriends two wharfies turned cabbies during the war - Bert and Cec and becomes closer to Jack Robinson who becomes a close friend and confident. In fact, the two of them, Jack now being recently divorced, dance around each other and the feelings they obviously feel for each other. Jack is hesitant due to her reputation of being a person who does a lot of casual lovers and Phryne because Jack is the first person since Renee to truly get in behind her defenses.
It is thanks to Jack though that she has closer over her sister's death, something she is incredibly thankful for. That isn't to say that the time she has spent in Australia has been easy or devoid if it's bad parts, far from it but Phryne loves it there and hopes to continue to grow closer to those who are forming her family - Bert, Cec, Dr Mac, Jack and Hugh, Dot and Mr Butler... Who is her Butler. Even the return of her father to Australia, while annoying and confusing at times especially with the revelation that his cousin actually survived the war after being declared dead, meaning they had no right to the money, and her parents relationship nearly ending she finds that she’s finally happy with life and is looking forward to actually – quite possibly – perusing a relationship with Jack which both terrifies and excites her.

[Use the Power Grid]
FIGHTING SKILLS: 4

OTHER POWERS: Phryne is perfect. She is a goddess. She is brilliant at everything. Okay maybe not but she has a lot more skills than a normal person. She is expert dancing, can sing and play the piano, picks up things very quickly, is a great shot with a gun and has incredibly intuition and is therefore great at solving crimes. She manages to win back 10,000 pounds from a champion poker player... etc. She is great at adapting to new situations and picking up new skills and getting into situations that she technically shouldn't get into. Also great at getting out of those situations too most of the time. She's skilled in aerobics, marksmanship, self defense, dancing, breaking and entering, circus tricks and generally everything a women shouldn't be skilled in. She also is fluent in French.
